Wavefront™ LASIK Technology and More in New Jersey – Jersey Shore Eye Associates

Multifocal lenses and wavefront™ LASIK technology at the New Jersey practice of Jersey Shore Eye Associates are just a few of the exciting and revolutionary vision correction treatments we offer to our patients. Multifocal lenses have dramatically improved vision in countless numbers of cataract patients, and custom wavefront™ LASIK has taken laser eye care a step further with even more precise vision correction.

Wavefront™ LASIK Technology

The Food and Drug Administration approved wavefront™-guided custom LASIK technology for use in treating eye conditions in 2002. The technology literally maps the patient's unique optical imperfections, then relays the information to an excimer laser, which performs the procedure.

How Wavefront™ Works

Wavefront™ LASIK technology for our New Jersey patients visiting Jersey Shore Eye Associates is 25 times more precise in detecting and measuring imperfections that cause vision problems. With wavefront™, a beam of light is focused on the patient's eye, passing through the cornea, lens, and retina, and reflected back. The wavefront™ diagnostic machine measures the reflected light, and translates the information onto a map which details any imperfections that may exist. The three-dimensional map will pinpoint areas indicating nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or any other patterns that may show what is known as higher order aberrations in the eye.

Once the 3-D map has been generated and has detailed the eye's irregularities, a computer translates the data into a mathematical algorithm, which act as treatment instructions to the laser that will perform the actual vision correction.

Wavefront™ vs. Traditional LASIK

Wavefront™ LASIK technology takes all of the innovations of traditional LASIK and builds upon them. Traditional LASIK treats only vision problems of a lower aberration, conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Wavefront™ LASIK treats lower and higher order aberrations, imperfections in the eye which affect your ability to see fine details. Wavefront™ LASIK technology, available right here at Jersey Shore Eye Associates, is capable of correcting a range of eye conditions, and possibly giving you even better vision than you could get with corrective eyewear.

Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) technology is a way of restoring and improving vision after cataract surgery. Our surgeons use advanced ReSTOR®, ReZoom™ and Crystalens® lens implants to enable cataract patients to see more clearly at multiple distances, as opposed to Monofocal IOLs which can only function to restore vision at one distance. Presbyopia (near-distance vision decline) sufferers can also benefit from multifocal lenses, which is the Providing clearer vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, multifocal intraocular lenses may eliminate the need for corrective eyeglasses or contacts. In addition to the many innovative eye care treatments we provide, including Wavefront™ LASIK technology, Jersey Shore Eye Associates offers a variety of treatments with intraocular lens implants.

ReSTOR®

Acrysof® ReSTOR® intraocular lenses (IOLs) are multifocal lens implants that are some of the most state-of-the-art vision correction treatments in use today. The need for prescription glasses after cataract surgery can be reduced, and even eliminated with ReSTOR® IOLs. Utilizing technology that has been used for decades to advance visual acuity in telescopes, microscopes, and lighthouse lamps, ReSTOR® IOLs have a multi-tiered surface that transmits and gathers light evenly over a range of distances, making it possible to correct both near and farsighted vision after cataract surgery. This is a major advance over monofocal IOLs, which can correct only one field of vision, typically necessitating some form of corrective eyewear in post-cataract surgery patients.

ReZoom™

ReZoom™ intraocular lenses are also used in cataract surgery at our New Jersey practice to replace a patient's cloudy natural lens and provide superior vision at all distances. Patients who have presbyopia are excellent candidates for ReZoom™ intraocular lens implants. These implants make it possible for most patients to see objects at near, intermediate, and far distances without the need for corrective eyewear. ReZoom™ lenses can adjust to multiple focal points, improving vision at various distances. The implants can help patients with reading and seeing while driving, and they can even help patients who have prescription bifocals.

Crystalens®

Crystalens® intraocular lenses are designed to be flexible so that they mimic the eye's natural lens. The flexibility allows the eye to see objects at near, intermediate, and far distances. The Crystalens® implant is the only intraocular lens that utilizes the natural focusing ability of the eye. Treatment with Crystalens® intraocular lenses has been proven to dramatically improve vision. In clinical trials, after undergoing lens replacement with the Crystalens® intraocular lenses, 100 percent of patients were able to see clearly at intermediate distances without glasses; 98.4 percent were able to read the newspaper without corrective eyewear; and 98.4 percent were able to pass a driver's license exam without the use of eyeglasses.

Crystalens® implants have been shown to improve vision for far distances within a day after surgery, and to provide gradual vision improvement for intermediate and near vision soon after.
