Multifocal IOL Treatment in New Jersey – Revolutionary Vision Correction for Cataract Patients

Intraocular lens, or IOL, treatment is the only procedure available that effectively improves vision for cataract patients. IOL technology, available at our New Jersey practice, has helped millions of patients the world over attain dramatically better vision with its surgically implanted contact lenses that can improve an array of conditions, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. When a cataract clouds the eyes natural lens, an intraocular lens implant can do wonders for restoring vision.

Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (IOL)

Multifocal intraocular lens, or IOL, technology available at our New Jersey practice allows patients to have improved vision at multiple distances. A traditional IOL is called a monofocal lens. With this, patients will, most of the time, need reading glasses. However, improved technology such as multifocal I-O lenses allows us to provide far and near vision correction, typically with no dependence on glasses. Our eye care physicians surgeons use advanced ReSTOR®, ReZoom™ and Crystalens® lens implants to restore clear vision to patients with cataracts. These exceptional lenses also provide effective treatment for presbyopia, which is the inevitable decline of near vision as a person ages and the natural lens of the eye loses flexibility. Providing clearer vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, multifocal intraocular lenses may eliminate the need for corrective eyeglasses or contacts. Jersey Shore Eye Associates offers a variety of treatments with intraocular lens implants.

Restor®

Restor® multifocal lenses by Alcon Acrysof®, the most common multifocal lenses in use today, can help cataract patients see all distances by using a multi-tiered surface that rises in concentric circles from the edge to the center. This design transmits and gathers light evenly over far, near, and medium distances. A clinical study of the effectiveness of Restor® IOLs indicated 80 percent of patients did not need glasses after the surgery. For those who still need glasses after the procedure, the prescription should be milder, and the glasses noticeably lighter. Plus those patients will more than likely not need to use their glasses as often as patients with monofocal intraocular lenses or lenses that only focus vision at one range.

ReZoom™

ReZoom™ IOLs are used in cataract surgery at our New Jersey practice to replace a patient's cloudy natural lens and provide superior vision at all distances. Patients who have presbyopia are also excellent candidates for ReZoom™ intraocular lens implants. These implants make it possible for most patients to see objects at near, intermediate, and far distances without the need for corrective eyewear. ReZoom™ lenses can adjust to multiple focal points, improving vision at various distances. The implants can help patients with reading and seeing while driving, and they can even help patients who have prescription bifocals.

Crystalens®

Crystalens® intraocular lenses are designed to be flexible so that they mimic the eye's natural lens. The flexibility allows the eye to see objects at near, intermediate, and far distances. The Crystalens® implant is the only IOL that utilizes the natural focusing ability of the eye. Treatment with Crystalens® intraocular lenses has been proven to dramatically improve vision. In clinical trials, after undergoing lens replacement with the Crystalens® intraocular lenses, 100 percent of patients were able to see clearly at intermediate distances without glasses; 98.4 percent were able to read the newspaper without corrective eyewear; and 98.4 percent were able to pass a driver's license exam without the use of eyeglasses.

Crystalens® implants have been shown to improve vision for far distances within a day after surgery, and to provide gradual vision improvement for intermediate and near vision soon after.

Alcon Acrysof® Toric Intraocular Lenses to Treat Astigmatism

Alcon Acrysof® Toric intraocular lenses are implantable contacts that are designed to treat an irregularly shaped natural eye, medically referred to as astigmatism. The Alcon Acrysof ® Toric lens is foldable, allowing for one of our surgeons to easily implant it into the eye through a small incision at the edge of the cornea. The lens then unfolds itself, working to correct irregularities that cause astigmatism. This can ultimately lead to better vision than a traditional intraocular lens not designed to treat astigmatism.

The IOL Procedure

After a cataract has been successfully removed with cataract surgery, one of our experienced cataract surgeons will begin the IOL implantation process. Exact details of the procedure will depend on the type of IOL being used, however most implantations involve the insertion of the IOL through a small, self-healing incision. The IOL is typically folded to fit inside the incision, then opens up to its permanent position once inside the eye. The entire procedure typically takes less than an hour to complete, and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

IOL Recovery

Short recovery times are one of the many benefits of IOL surgery. Patients can typically resume normal daily activities within a day after the procedure; however, it is not advisable to undertake activities which may cause a rise in blood pressure or that may place pressure on the treated eye. Patients are also advised not to rub the eyes after surgery. The full extent of vision correction after IOL implantation may not be apparent for several weeks; but, after that time, patients should see  significantly improved vision, particularly with multifocal implants.
